MEGUMI has managed the Spanish language school Nihon Hispano Academy (a 42-year-old established institution) and the French language school Espace Français, alongside serving as a French Embassy Certified Legal Translator, for 25 years.

A Message from MEGUMI:
Having been exposed to diverse languages since childhood, I personally faced the barrier of "I can speak, but why does it sound unnatural?" many times. This experience led to a strong desire to teach "living conversation"—the kind you don't get just by memorizing grammar. In this school, I offer all the living knowledge I have acquired, including intonation, conversational interjections, and the culture behind the words that are never found in textbooks. Let me help you elevate your Japanese to the next level.

Course Details: Native Conversational Fluency

Achieve Natural Daily Communication

Imagine the joy of being asked, "Wow, where did you learn such natural Japanese?" Our course aims not just for correct Japanese, but for understanding the "timing," "tempo," and the cultural context behind the words. Acquire the practical conversational skills that will make your life and work in Japan smoother and more enjoyable.

  • Learn essential workplace expressions like "Otsukaresama desu" and "Osewa ni narimasu."
  • Master natural interjections and reactions for smooth conversation, such as "Hee, sou nan desu ne" (Oh, is that right?) and "Naruhodo, benkyou ni narimasu" (I see, that's insightful).
  • Practice differentiating request expressions like "~kudasai" vs. "~moraeru deshou ka" based on the person and situation.
  • Understand the nuance of Keigo (honorific speech) to use it confidently in business settings.
  • Understand and practice pronunciation differences based on accent, such as "hashi" (chopsticks) vs. "hashi" (bridge).
  • Learn and practice different expressions used by males and females, or depending on age and status.

Secrets to Achieving Conversational Fluency

1. Intonation and Pitch Accent

Japanese has a unique pitch accent where the meaning of a word changes based on high and low tones (e.g., "ame" (rain) vs. "ame" (candy)). By learning the correct accent, you can accurately convey the meaning of your words. In this section, you'll learn how to use intonation to express not just the words, but also your feelings and intentions.

2. Mastering Keigo (Honorific) and Tamego (Casual)

Using the appropriate level of speech—Keigo for superiors/business, Tamego for family/friends—is crucial for smooth Japanese communication. In this section, you will practice using these styles in specific scenarios to naturally switch between them based on the relationship and setting.

3. Fluid Use of Particles (Te-ni-wo-ha)

Particles like "te, ni, wo, ha, ga, mo" (Te-ni-wo-ha) define the relationship between words and add nuance to sentences. Mastering them ensures your sentences make logical sense and accurately convey your intended meaning.

I’m Slowly Starting to Understand the Japanese Sense of Words

(28-year-old American male living in Tokyo)

One evening after work, I went to an izakaya with my Japanese coworkers. One of them said, “This chair feels kind of zarazara,” but I had no idea what that meant. I just laughed it off at the time, but inside I kept thinking, “What does zarazara mean?” Later, during an online lesson, I told my teacher about it. The teacher touched a desk and a wall and explained, “This kind of rough surface is what we call zarazara.” At that moment, it finally clicked. I thought, “Oh, so that’s what my coworker meant back at the izakaya!” and it felt like such a relief. Of course, there are still many other onomatopoeia that confuse me, but every time a word from daily life connects with something I learn in the lesson, I feel like Japanese is gradually taking root inside me.

This School Helped Me Continue My Japanese Learning Journey

(30-year-old female, living in New Hampshire, USA)

I work for a Japanese company in the United States. At work, English is more than enough, but I became interested in Japanese and had been studying on my own. Eventually, I hit a wall and felt stuck, and that’s when a friend introduced me to Ms. Megumi, which led me to this school. In one lesson, I asked, “What’s the difference between 肉が食べたい and 肉を食べたい?” The teacher explained, “肉が食べたい is the natural way to say you want to eat meat, and it’s what people usually use in conversation. 肉を食べたい is grammatically correct too, but it sounds a bit more explanatory.” It was really refreshing to learn such subtle differences that I would never have noticed through self-study. I still get confused with some expressions, but by asking questions in the lessons, I’m gradually deepening my understanding and gaining confidence in using Japanese.
